WaPo reports: Health-Care Bill Wouldn't Raise Deficit, Report Says

Actual economists who know how to read the CBO report say:

The headlines will tell us that it will cost $829 billion (that is, less than $900 billion) over ten years, and will reduce the cumulative deficit by $81 billion.

Those numbers are phony for any number of reasons, but notice that the "deficit reduction" is the net result of $518 billion in increased spending from expanded insurance coverage, $404 billion in reduced spending from "other provisions affecting direct spending," and $196 billion in increased revenues. The $404 billion "does not include effects on spending subject to future appropriations." So: Will Congress actually cut Medicare reimbursements (by over 20 percent), unlike previous years? More fundamentally: The increase in revenues ($196 billion) is over twice the net reduction in the deficit. So put aside all the other problems with the numbers: None of this net "deficit reduction" results from spending efficiencies. It is all tax increases and more. Will those higher taxes be limited to those making in excess of $250,000 per year? Please... Note also that the analysis states in the first paragraph that the "analysis is preliminary in large part because the Chairman's mark, as amended, has not yet been embodied in legislative language."

So, it is no longer the production of only laws and sausages that should be hidden from view. Chairmen's marks also are to be hidden from polite society, lest voters, CBO, and an ever-hopeful press be scandalized. So much for transparency.

Since thier ~~pitiful display~~ special report ~~snivelling about~~ documenting SNL´s ~~hilarious spoof~~ dishonest depiction of ~~their god~~ President Obama in a skit Saturday, CNN has been on a fact-finding mission, exposing destructive falsehoods and shedding light on numerous popularly held misconceptions. The following is a partial list of the myths I´ve heard about that they´ve busted so far:

Technically, "Gilligan´s" Island was both uncharted and, more importantly, unnamed.

It´s questionable at best whether Transformers really are more than meets the eye.

The Bradys were more of an Assembly than a Bunch.

Humpty Dumpty was NOT pushed.

The emperor was, in fact, naked.

It is impossible to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Tootsie Pop in only 3 licks.

Dr. Dre does not have a license to practice medicine.

Cap´n Crunch is not a credentialed pilot of any seafaring vessle.

The Beatles were wrong; experts say you need food, clothing, and shelter in addition to love.

It is the size of the ship, and not just the motion in the ocean.

Do we really need more intellectuals?

I can´t stop thinking about Steven F. Hayward´s piece in the Washington Post yesterday. Sure, he had some decent points to be made about "the conservative movement" and what he refers to as its having been "thrown off balance, with the populists dominating and the intellectuals retreating and struggling to come up with new ideas." But I can´t help but think that there´s a time for everything. There´s a time for populists like Beck and Malkin, and there´s a time for the Buckleys and the Friedmans. But I don´t think any one group or person can define who or what is an American conservative. And in this time of serious disappointment in the political arena, on both the left and the right, American´s aren´t particularly looking for an intellectual to define us. As a matter of fact, Mr. Hayward would do well to realize that a big part of why the U.S. is in the state it´s in today is due to the public being sold on a new, intellectual man of the world to lead us out of the darkness that that straight shootin' cowboy, George W. Bush brought us into. And look how well that´s been working out so far.

I agree with Hayward, that conservatives need to have "compelling alternatives" to offer, rather than just criticism. But, where he doesn´t think it´s clear that we have any because they don´t seem to come from someone he would designate an intellectual, I have seen and heard a number of ideas coming from both the public and private sector. I can think of one from each right off the top of my head; both addressing Obamacare and offering alternatives to the Public Option/Government takeover the so-called intellectuals on the left seem bent on. Just today Gov. Bobby Jindal put forward his 10 ideas to increase the affordability and quality of health care in the Washington Post. They slightly overlap, but also compliment John Mackey´s eight reforms that would greatly lower the cost of health care for everyone from his August 11 WSJ op-ed.

In my opinion each one of these guys has been shot down by media from the left and the right, partly because they weren´t viewed as intellectuals, and partly because they didn´t fit the "populist" profile. But I also feel that makes these guys great representatives of all us average Joe´s struggling to be a part of this conservative movement. Many of us don´t fit into either the intellectual or the populist mold, but in our own ways and in our own words we´re getting our point of view out there. Sometimes there´s a splash that causes waves, but more often it´s just the plunk of a pebble whose ripples are felt only in a certain radius. But when thousands of those ripple radius' from thousands of those plunks come together it can really stir the waters.

So when Mr. Hayward declares "[t]he single largest defect of modern conservatism...is its insufficient ability to challenge liberalism at the intellectual level, in particular over the meaning and nature of progress" I think he has not only put too high a price on intellectualism, but also underestimates the progress that is taking place while intellectuals are sitting around trying to define its meaning and nature.
